KyivPride2017 Organizing Committee statement on the turmoil in Kharkiv on IDAHOT

KyivPride2017 Organizing Committee expresses deep concern regarding the turmoil that took place on May 17 - International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) - during the events in Kharkiv. We are outraged over the attack committed by a group of unidentified individuals against participants of performance against homophobia, biphobia and transphobis in Kharkiv. The public assembly, meant to draw attention of Kharkiv citizens that LGBTI community are deprived of their basic rights, namely right to marry, has ended with violence, while two police officers and an activist were injured.

“Despite beautiful day of May, 17 and great support we received, I am sad now. Our friends and colleagues were attacked in Kharkiv by the group of some 30 aggressors, rainbow flag was burned down and public performance dedicated to IDAHOT was disrupted. This is a signal not to take for granted everything we have achieved so far” - Ruslana Panukhnyk, Director of KyivPride.

KyivPride2017 Organizing Committee emphasizes once again that hate attacks against LGBTI people are unacceptable and should not take place in a democratic and tolerant state. We urge police to provide immediate and effective investigation of these incidents, and also peaceful and safe carrying out of Ukraine’s main LGBTI event in June - KyivPride2017.
